How to Get Your Brand Cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity & AI Overviews

Ask ChatGPT for "the best SEO consultant for multilingual websites" or ask Perplexity to compare hosting providers, and watch what happens: a confident answer, three to five sources cited, and a customer who never sees page one of Google. If your brand isn't in those citations, you're invisible in the fastest-growing slice of search — regardless of your classic rankings.

The discipline of earning those citations goes by GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) or AEO (Answer Engine Optimization). Different name, same job: making your content the thing AI engines quote.

How AI engines choose their sources

Classic search ranks pages by hundreds of signals and shows a list. AI engines do something different: they retrieve a small set of candidate sources, synthesize an answer, and cite the sources that contributed. Three properties decide whether you make that candidate set:

1. Retrievability. If the engine's retrieval layer can't find and parse you, nothing else matters. This is where classic technical SEO carries over completely: clean HTML, fast rendering, crawlable content, no JavaScript walls around your key text.

2. Citability. Engines prefer content that answers a question directly and self-contained. A 40-word direct answer at the top of a section is quotable; a meandering 400-word intro is not.

3. Authority. Engines lean heavily on consensus — brands mentioned across multiple independent sources get cited more. This is why digital PR quietly became a GEO tactic.

The practical framework

Restructure for direct answers. For every question your customers ask, have a section whose first sentence is the answer, followed by the elaboration. Headings phrased as questions ("How much does a technical SEO audit cost?") map exactly to how people prompt AI engines.

Make entities unambiguous. AI engines think in entities: who you are, what you do, where you operate. Use consistent naming everywhere, complete schema.org markup (Person, Organization, Service, FAQPage), and an about page that states plainly what you are. Ambiguity kills citations.

Earn independent mentions. Get named in comparison posts, industry directories, podcasts, and guest content. One authoritative third-party mention often does more for AI citations than ten new blog posts, because it feeds the consensus signal.

Cover the comparison queries. A huge share of commercial AI prompts are comparisons ("X vs Y", "best tool for Z"). If you publish honest comparison content in your niche, you become the source engines lean on for exactly the queries that convert.

Measuring it

Build a query set of 20–30 prompts your customers would realistically ask, in every language you serve. Run them monthly across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI Overviews. Track three numbers: how often you're cited, in what position/context, and with what sentiment. That's your AI share of voice — and it responds to the work above within weeks, not months.

The honest caveat

GEO is built on top of classic SEO, not instead of it. An unhealthy site with thin authority won't be saved by question-formatted headings. Fix the foundation, then optimize for citations — in that order.
